It seems Prince William and Kate Middleton .. when they get married... want to have no staff at their disposal. They want to do it all themselves... cooking, shopping etc.  Unlike William's father Prince Charles and his wife Camilla who have a staggering 124 staff to "run the bath water" to driving the car.  I heard that information on our news last night and nearly fell out of my chair...... all those people cost about 6 million pounds per year to pay.  Good heavens .........  I wonder if they all got a Christmas gift....

On winter days its good to have a hobby and fiddling and designing in paintshop pro is one of my favourite ones.   I love to make quilts but haven't done so for a while now.  Preferring to spend my time watching old movies on the telly or reading mysteries from our library.  Anyway here is another image for you to save and use as you wish .. *except of course for any commercial purposes ......  Click on it to see it full size.

welcoming top for your vintage blog.
Or use it to add a greeting too and you have a perfect card for someone special.
Arh! Ha!
The game is afoot .........
Sherlock says to Watson.....
I have three new Sherlock games to play on the computer. I bought them for myself for Christmas so I'll certainly be prepared now for the rest of winter indoors waiting for spring to get sprung.  I love these games.  The video quality is superb... the secrets, the logic, the clues ... the interiors of the homes etc is wonderful.  And of course old Dr. Watson is his silly self.  I don't know how he  became the right hand man of Sherlock... he's frightened of things, a bit scared of blood, always gets a few clues wrong and is continually saying to Sherlock "what do you make of this Holmes".   So funny.
Anyway I am going to burn my copies of the games to dvds today so I don't lose them if we have another computer crash.    Today I'm finishing Sherlock Holmes - Awakened ... (it was a good one) and starting Sherlock and the Mystery of the Mummy.   I might even have a glass of wine whilst I try to solve the clues....

Wow!!! so many snow storms happening across the USA ... .. many places just aren't prepared for it and as I heard one Canadian this morning on the Fox News Channel say ... it was something we deal with all the time ... it's no big deal.... :-))    Certainly true for us in Canada... but not so easy for places that don't have enough snow ploughs or equipment to deal with road conditions or airports.

Christmas has come and gone already ... sometimes I wonder why all that fuss.  Our day was very quiet .. I had a glass of wine and sat back to watch some old movies on the telly and watch the snow coming down.  Now a new year approaches ..... they go by so quickly.

You can click on the image to see it larger.  Our deer little friends didn't come today.. Christmas Day ... I guess because people were out snow mobiling in the field and I know they hate the noise of those things.  So do I.  Perhaps tomorrow when it's quieter they might come again for the corn.

Santa arrived at my house and I received some pretty perfume, some slippers and a great Sherlock Holmes book...and some new warm gloves which I'll certainly use when I have to do the shovelling of the snow which is coming down again this evening.

I hope you and your family had a wonderful Christmas Day.  It sure goes quick ..........

Downunders ...   Please leave some gifts in Santa's bag and sleigh for us up here tomorrow night......
Good news about the World Trade Centre rescuers getting their billion dollar and more health package.  They certainly deserve it.  I can only imagine working for years in the dust, and chemicals and whatever else was happening at the disaster site. Breathing in all that crappy stuff ...   And Christmas travellers seem to be getting back on track in airports which were closed for many days due to winter storms.    Nice news about Ellen Degeneres donating one million meals to homeless pets.  Oh how I wish I had millions of dollars to help them all.  Good on you Ellen.. thank you for doing that.  And I am enjoying my second Sherlock Holmes video game .. especially today whilst I'm home alone. Hubby has gone out on a logging truck with a friend ... I'd love to have been going too but not room for another person.  The scenery would be magnificent..and I hope he comes home with some photos .............
I think I have had my early Christmas gift this afternoon.......... when a mother deer came with her little one.  She was amongst five others and she's been here before to eat the cracked corn from our feeder at the bottom of the yard but after hearing that there is a cougar around town I was very worried about the little ones.  The little guy "hid" behind his mum and looked out from around her to see if I was safe to get closer to.  So funny ... he was peaking around the corner of his mum's behind looking at me .... Mum came closer and I was about a foot away from her face ..(wire fence separating us). I could see her beautiful big brown eyes and the eyelashes and the hair on her chin.  It was the closest we'd been and I'm always careful not to get too friendly with them because they are indeed wild animals and can be startled at any time. The fence was between us and there were no grumpy bucks around who seem to take over the whole scenario. The  back field was quiet and pretty in the afternoon sunshine on the snow and trees and I talked gently and softly to them all.   Seeing them standing on the beautiful snow and being so close today was indeed a special Christmas gift .. from God.

Gotta love hats....
I love the vintage ephemera.... all types of pamphlets, advertisements, cards, bits of paper that belonged in an era long gone.  Working at a Museum and Art Gallery before I came here to Canada it was pure joy to go to work each day and be in amongst not only ephemera but also decorative items like plates, vases, books .... and so much more. Gorgeous costumes from Victorian times, boxes, jewellery..... we even had Florence Nightingale's apron.  Cream coloured satin evening boots never worn and  delicately embellished with little pink embroidered roses and covered buttons down the front.  They were exquisite.

They'll be some happy families this Christmas when the USS Harry S Truman warship returns home. It's due to dock tomorrow morning and on board are 119 sailors who have not seen their new babies.  Three thousand men on board .... and they are returning from Afghanistan.  There's a special tent set up for the mothers and new babies so I'm looking forward to seeing that on the news.  How wonderful for them to be home for the holildays.  Have a very Merry Christmas brave ones ... enjoy the days with your families...and most importantly ... stay safe.

We rang our telephone company this morning to see where our new internet modem is ....  its way overdue ... and they told us they had no record of  sending it out for us  .... so I'm mad as a hatter.  Just as well we have our old one otherwise we'd be without internet over Christmas because its now sure to take another 10 days  or so to get to us.   Incompetence it seems.. is getting more prevalent as I get older.  Companies never were like this.  Even things you purchase like toasters, kettles, hair dryers or anything you use on a regular basis seem to only last a few months or a year at best before you need to buy a new one.  Things just aren't made like they used to be.  My mum and dad back in Australia when I was a little girl had an old fridge which was as heavy and strong as could be.  It never stopped working and even after 25 years or so it was still going strong.

Not these days.  Cars bend like a crumpled piece of paper - if you have an accident your car more than likely will get crushed unlike the old ones which were really built like tanks.  I guess its a sign of the times. Using cheaper materials, things always being made overseas... jobs going overseas... faulty everything.  It's definitely a throw away society...  nobody mends socks anymore,  socks aren't even made strong enough to last a decent length of time so they need repairing.  We are filling the earth with stuff .... And what about all that pretty christmas paper.  Who saves that nowadays.  Sad really ....

I am thinking I might need to start a new vintage blog just to share these pretty images in.

With softening, coloring, masking and all the things I can do to these great illustrations perhaps some of you would enjoy being able to snag them.

I'd love to hear from anyone if they think they might enjoy a special place to save them from ... (aka my new blog called "Vintage With Love"  perhaps....

The once beautiful house of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.... He wrote a lot of his stories in there ...built when his wife got very ill.  He would get up early and begin his writings about 6 a.m.... The Hound of the Baskervilles was one of those stories....   What a gorgeous home and now its in peril ....  I have no clue what the English are thinking when they let this one slip by and get into the hands of developers who want to turn it into a bunch of flats .. (or apartments).  It would be worth a mint to keep it in the style of the period he lived in it ... and have it open to the public.  Great efforts are under way to have that happen but its been a while now ... I sure do hope they keep it .. he deserves it.... he was a great man .. not only a great author.

Gotta love these two hooligans...
how gorgeous.

Today I shovelled snow and more snow.  It's still coming down and tomorrow I'll be up to my ears in it once again.  Wow... on the telly I think most of Canada and the USA are floundering in the depths of the white cold stuff.  Stranded motorists hopping from one car to the next in an effort to keep warm overnight. Makes sense when you think about that.... why have everyone sitting in their own vehicles using up the gas trying to keep warm when you can "vehicle hop" and share the heat. It keeps coming down and piling up. Army helicopters trying to rescue people ... it's quite bad.  Florida's orange orchards are freezing... they are trying desperately to save their crops.

Aletha .. I just read your blog and am sorry to hear that you are not well. Sending gentle hugs to you and I hope that you and your family have a wonderful Christmas.  Blessings and best wishes from Jana
If you have a blog you might like to add some vintage images below......  I'll be making lots more of these ... so let me know if you would like anything special and I'll see what I can do for you.  Click on them to save them to your computer.

I love vintage images of children. Going through my folders tonight in the zillions of files
I have on anything vintage I found these two little cuties.  I softened them and framed them in a
shabby chic look ... makes you wonder who they were... what they did when they grew
up .. when did they die ... and I guess their relatives are still alive today ....
so pretty ..   It's a public domain image so grab it if you like ...

There are so many pretty colours to decorate for Christmas.  I think red is my favourite but gold would have to be a close second.  Soft blue ... perhaps like my background here ..... as I look out my back window across the deck covered in beautiful white snow ... and onto the trees, ground, fences and beyond there seems to be a gorgeous mist of sunshine, sparkle and coldness one can only see up here in the northern hemisphere.  That's my favourite thing about being here .... the changing of the seasons when one can see the snow, or the autumn leaves.  Downunder in Australia, having lunch in the heat of a summer day is no way to spend Christmas.  We have our big Christmas meal at lunch time unlike here in Canada when its the evening meal.  And as you look out the window onto the trees covered in snow ... you wonder why does anyone need to decorate when its already so gorgeous.  Snowmen, and branches loaded down with the white stuff, fence posts looking like overloaded ice cream cones, windows with that frosted air that looks like you've sprayed the false stuff onto them.   I wish all my Aussies could at least spend one Christmas in the snow... I'm sure they would absolutely adore it.
No internet modem is no fun.   For the past four days we've been without internet and have a new modem on order. Luckily today we found an old one and we're using that.  It was like being on a desert island with no contact with the outside world.  :-))    I am still waiting for my 6 days of yahoo group mail to come in and I think I'll be waiting for the rest of the afternoon.  We did manage to get to the library in town to do a few necessary things on internet and we're keeping our fingers crossed that we'll be hooked up pretty soon on a new faster modem which is being delivered hopefully some day this week.

We've had lots of snow ... lots of darkness it seems.....  and I have spent the weekend playing my Sherlock Holmes vs Jack the Ripper game which I love. I still have about 20 pages of walkthrough to finish ........ it is such a difficult game ...  Anyway I hope your christmas shopping is well under way ... and that all is on track for you to be having a super Christmas .....

Saddened today to hear of the death of Elizabeth Edwards.
She fought her battle with cancer bravely.
She was the wife of the disgraced Presidential candidate John Edwards.
She was cheated on by him and had to deal with the public humiliation of him having a mistress and a child with the other woman.

As if her cancer wasn't enough to deal with.
He treated her very badly.

A rose for you dear lady .....
Rest in peace with no more pain.

It's a pity she hasn't told the "world" that she isn't paying for the 300 guests from her show to come to Australia.  It's the Aussie government paying for their visit .   Very sneaky on her part ..and totally misleading.... they all think Oprah paid for their flight and accommodation and all that goes with it when they arrive today and tomorrow in Sydney.  Aussies are outraged and rightly so... what was the Government thinking........
RED RED RED .... Gotta have red for Christmas.
Red bows on trees, on stair railings, red parcels, red tinsel, red berries, red candles, red sweaters, red dinner plates, red poinsettas..........Can never have too much red.
A pretty red desktop wallpaper for you to add to your computer this December.
It sure looks nice on my big screen.

Cookies for christmas ..  Not that I'm going to bake any .... I would end up eating the lot which I cannot do when one has diabetes.   bah! humbug ....

Isn't this the prettiest tree and decorated area... gifts co-ordinated in the right colours. I have always wanted a big sweeping staircase like this one.... There must be some spectacular decorated trees in some of the gorgeous homes one sees in magazines and in fancy cities ....
Old Santa isn't too far away.....  I sure wish I was close to lots of pretty shops so I could see all the gorgeous things. Our little country town is getting smaller and I am missing the "busy-ness" of shopping for Christmas goodies.  I could walk around for hours oohing  and arhhhhiinnng   at all the lovely creations they have on sale.  I hope you all have a wonderful time with your family and friends this holiday season.  And I hope that the New Year will bring some peace to all those countries who insist on making our lives a misery by threatening and carrying out bad things.  Why can't everyone live in peace.  Why can't the guys get over their juvenile problems about whose got the biggest and most powerful weaponry ....  if only the billions of dollars they spend on fighting could be spent instead on helping each other.  We only have one planet and its a beautiful one.  But I sure don't think it will last much longer the way things are going especially in the Middle East.

Mother and baby deer came to visit today ... they are actually in my yard as I write this ... so gorgeous. The little one stood behind the fence post thinking maybe I couldn't see him or her .... sneaking a peak around the post every now and again to tip it's head sideways and perhaps wonder what the heck is that thing (me) putting that yummy yellow stuff out onto the snow.  Cracked corn they love ....  and I'm so glad I can feed them.  I will miss them for sure if we ever manage to move.

Gosh why isn't something being done about this horrible Wikileaks guy who is giving out American secrets.  They can charge him with treason even though he is not an American citizen.  All the information that was leaked from the Pentagon by an employee there and is now in the hands of the whole world because this guy published it or gave out the information to a zillion newspapers ....  surely must be a crime with a punishment attached.   If someone stood on the steps of some building and shouted out this information he would indeed be charged with treason ...........  just awful and it puts all service men and women in peril not only in the USA armed forces but across the world.

I had missed my Sherlock game and couldn't find the dvd I saved it too so I could install it onto our new computer.  Well finally after hours of searching I gave up and went online ... it was on sale ... $4.99 only ... so I purchased it again.

At least I knew it would be working properly (keeping my fingers crossed) when I installed it.  Yes it works fine.
Then I found the dvd I had made of it when I purchased it last year.  Oh well... isn't that always the way.   It's a great game and its like watching a movie.  The graphics are stunning .... and after printing out the 50 pages of walkthrough I'll be set for the winter doing all the tasks and solving the crimes.  Love it love it love it................... :-)
That will keep me busy whilst the snow is coming down .....

Saturday, November 27, 2010

This morning when our neighbour's dog started barking I knew our deer were here for lunch.  They are so sweet and a mum brought her little one with her .........  and a short while later a gorgeous guy turned up with antlers so stunning he looked like Santa had landed in the yard and I was looking at the reindeer.  They have already gone through a big bag of cracked corn so they are getting in much earlier this year .. and winter hasn't even arrived yet.  Another four stood out in the field not quite sure if it was safe or not.   Bless them I prayed for their safe return.
Grab the pretties...
click to see the images I share full size and if you haven't already made up a folder on your computer to save them to you had better do that soon.....

Seems Donald Trump might make a bid for President of the United States in 2012.  He's frustrated and annoyed and saddened at the state of the country and in the direction it's headed. He will make up his mind by July of next year and will finance his campaign from his eight billion dollar fortune.  Well that ought to be enough money ... !!!!   He's angry at what Obama has done .... and I think a guy like him might know a thing or two about being successful and making financial growth happen.  That's what the country needs.......... jobs ....... and more jobs to build the economy.  Will certainly be an interesting Presidential race in 2012.  I think Hillary will also give it a try again.

Thursday, November 25, 2010

I'm thinking since our weather has gone very cold and bad that I might have to install my Sherlock Holmes Jack the Ripper game on my new computer. It was great fun and I never did get to the finish.  It went on for what seemed like years and so many clues and tasks to perform and puzzles to solve. It will keep me going till summer I think. Now all I have to do is find the disk I saved it to.  I sure do hate it when one's computer decides to give up the ghost and stop working.  I'm completely addicted to anything Sherlock ... and I hope santa brings me a Kindle this year so I can go online and download the 430 or so books that Amazon has with Sherlock in the title.  Maybe old Santa's sleigh might tip over a bit as he flies over our house up here in the woods of northern British Columbia as he comes from the North Pole and a Kindle will fall out for me.... I can only hope .........
Isn't he a cute santa on my background ... I love him because he obviously loves animals with all those cats around him.  I don't think there is anything nicer than being in your bed and being surrounded or at least sat on ... by your pets.  When my sweet little guy Wilbur was a puppy he would try and chew the pages of the book I was reading. He loved snuggling up close to me ... snoozing in the afternoon sunshine often upside down with all legs in the air.... or going around and around in a circle many times till he felt it was the right spot to plonk himself down next to his mum.  He used to snore (as does my beautiful grand dog) ... they are so funny.  I can imagine in this cold .. not yet winter... we seem to be having here in Canada and across the USA that many pets would be curled up cosily on the beds of their owners.  No matter how big your house is they all tend to congregate into the one spot .. and that's as close as they can be to you ... on your bed. It's like sleeping with a bunch of bears ...  :-)   Gotta love it !!!

It's a desktop wallpaper for you... click on the image to see it larger and save it from there.

Christmas is just around the corner. I think this is the first year of my entire existence that I have not been motivated or have any incentive at all to decorate my house or go shopping.  Of course it would help if I won the lottery to do the shopping with ........  and maybe if the weather lightens up a bit and I can stand outside for longer than 10 minutes I might put up my little reindeer and sleigh which is made entirely from lights....  it looks so pretty on the snow.  But inside our house.. I'm not all that sure that I'll bother this year.
Oh well.. we'll see what happens in the coming weeks.   I don't really need to decorate when I can look out the window and see lovely trees covered in snow. It looks like I'm already inside of a christmas card.

My sweet little deer friends were back today ... its nice when they come in the afternoon and I can get some photos of them.   We've also had so many small black birds come to the feeders. They have cleaned us out.
This little guy is obviously glad his owner is home and enjoys going head first into the shoes.  My sweet little girl cat would do the same to my shoes when I came home from work.  I guess she missed her old mum.

Military Pegs Hourly Air Force One Cost at $181G, as Obama Sets Travel Record.

President Obama has spent more days abroad in his first two years than any other president.
I think that's all he does.  Flying around blowing his own trumpet like he did yesterday to an Illinois car company who they bailed out last year.  Hypocritical thing about that was ....   all the workers were sent home because of the security problems and they were put on half pay for their efforts.  Wow!   The President comes to visit your work and you are told to return home and we'll only pay you for half a day's work.   Urgh!!!   I really don't think he understands the American people at all and what they are going through.

A grim day in Dallas, Texas .... 47 years ago today.  I was thirteen and I remember hearing the details on our black and white television set.  As I grew older I learned who he was and what had happened and when I began coming to the United States pretty much on a regular basis over a few decades I  visited the spot where he was assassinated.   I stood on the grassy verge where his motorcade had passed by... looking up at the Texas Book Depository

where the gunshot came from.... or did it...   Even today nobody knows who really killed John F Kennedy.
Theories abound ....   and the haunting photo of Jackie leaning back over the limosine with her hand outstretched trying to recover the part of her husband's brain.  It was awful.  I think its one of those days we all know where we were and what we were doing when it happened.   And I have seen the eternal flame at Arlington National Cemetery..... I could not believe I was there with him .. so close... so unreal ....
