Beautiful deer in our backyard this morning. It's cold, drizzly and foggy and they were there eating the bird seed tossed out by the birds.   There is snow up on the hills and of course on the mountains but not on our ground yet ... sometime today I think it will arrive.  It makes me think of Christmas and I adore it.

Halloween is this coming week. Where on earth did October go to so quickly.  Hubby's birthday tomorrow so we might go for a walk in the woods.  The trees are absolutely gorgeous and I love finding the really big leaves that fall .. in all colours and sizes.  I am quite looking forward to winter so I can sit in my new leather recliner chair with my white faux fur rug on me and watch some of my favourite English murder mysteries, or Downton Abbey..etc.   Nothing nicer than a comfy chair and a hot cup of tea.. scones too of course or perhaps some banana bread. If large fluffy snow flakes start coming down I usually run outside and stand on the deck with my arms out so they will land on my black sweater.  I know, I'm weird ...  :-)

Beautiful morning today .. misty and quiet, serene and chilly ... looking out over the field I saw the deer coming to visit the bird feeders.  There were 7 in their little group and it was wonderful to see them as we  usually do when winter is nearly upon us.  Sadly I could hear gun shots going off because hunting season is in full mode. Luckily the deer were close to our town and they are not allowed to be shot so close to the populated area.  I wish all the deer in British Columbia would come to the field and stay safe.  Breaks my heart to know many of them will die this season.

I also had a visit from an absolutely gorgeous bird called a Stellar Jay and he's about half the size of a crow and has the most magnificent coloured feathers of black and gradually going into the brightest blue ... I'd never seen one before and he's full of energy and interest for me to give him peanuts in their shells which he diligently takes and positions into the soft lawn which is covered with leaves. He pushes the peanut into the soft earth with his beak and pecks at it like a wood pecker, driving it as deep as it will go then he covers it with some of the leaves and flies back to the tree for me to give him more nuts.    I guess by his activities he'll be around all winter now to claim his food stash once the snow gets deep and the weather is really cold.   I love him... he's very special and clever.  I'm glad I'll be seeing him during the long winter months.

I have found out why the geese "honk" as they fly above me going south for the winter. I love hearing them and they make such a noise its incredible.  Seems they are talking to their other family members ... giving them guidance I guess or telling them which way they are meant to be flying.  Also found out (after wondering about it) ... how or why they fly at night as well as daylight.  With the thousands of miles they need to fly they get overheated flapping their beautiful big wings ... so the night air keeps them much cooler so they can fly further and faster.   Nature sure is marvellous.

Christmas isn't far away .... Halloween first though .... time goes so quickly I just can't keep up.  The little birds are stashing away the seeds and so is the squirrel for the long, long cold winter.
I feel a bit like an old bear too .... getting ready to more or less "hibernate" for the snowy months because it gets too cold to go anywhere and our little country town doesn't have many places to go... A visit to the supermarket or the doctor or drugstore will just about be it ...

I love these pretty vintage images. I might have to use this one and create something for my Etsy Shoppe...
